Karl Tegland

Karl B. Tegland is the author or co-author of sixteen volumes of West's Washington Practice, including the Courtroom Handbook on Washington Evidence and the Washington Handbook on Civil Procedure.

He has been an author for West since 1979 and has recently assumed responsibility for all volumes of Washington Practice formerly authored or co-authored by Lewis Orland.

Mr. Tegland also writes and publishes Tegland's Litigation Today, a monthly newsletter for Washington judges and practitioners, and is a member of the Washington Supreme Court's Committee on Pattern Jury Instructions.

Mr. Tegland is a 1972 graduate of the University of Washington School of Law. He is a former member of the law school's faculty and was the 1994 Shefelman Distinguished Lecturer on Evidence.

He is a frequent speaker at educational programs for both judges and practitioners, and teaches bar review courses on evidence and civil procedure for Rigos Professional Education Programs.

A recent computer-assisted search of Washington's case law has shown that Mr. Tegland is undoubtedly the most frequently cited legal commentator in Washington (1980 to present) - having been cited as authoritative in more than 850 opinions by the Washington Supreme Court and Court of Appeals.

Mr. Tegland is a member of the Washington bar and maintains a law office in Mill Creek, Washington. His private practice is limited to consulting on issues of evidence and civil procedure.

In his spare time, he enjoys performing music with fellow attorney Jim Varnell, in the Raucous Band.
